By Albert Bierstadt. Bierstadt based this on one of Carleton Watkins's early photographs of the Grizzly Giant. The tree is roughly 2,700 years old, and it dwarfs everything around it to the point where scale stops meaning anything. This was a study, not a finished painting. It's more honest for it.
